Remove background noise from an iPhone voice memo
How to denoise a café or street voice memo on iPhone without uploading. Share into Files, run ARP on-device, compare before and after.
Why voice memos pick up the room
Voice Memos is great for capture and terrible at hiding the room. A café memo, a sidewalk note, a hallway reminder — the mic hears speech and everything behind it: chatter, traffic, HVAC. When you play it back later, the words are there, but the room is in the way.
Cloud “AI cleaning” tools can help, but they usually mean uploading the recording. If the memo is personal, client-sensitive, or you simply do not want a third party holding the file, you need an on-device path.
Steps: clean a voice memo with ARP
- Share the memo into Files. ARP does not open Voice Memos directly. In Voice Memos, use Share → Save to Files (or a folder in iCloud Drive / On My iPhone).
- Import in ARP. Open ARP → Add Recording → pick the saved memo from Files.
- Tap ARP on its row. The cleaning runs on your device. Then switch Original / Cleaned / Removed, and transcribe both to compare.
- Listen, then keep. Export M4A free, or 24-bit WAV / AIFF with one-time Premium. Exports use the source sample rate.
Tips that matter
- Closer mic placement still wins — denoise helps the room; it does not invent missing consonants.
- ARP measures LUFS, SNR, and noise floor on your file. Hear the same demos on the homepage.
- 10 recordings free; one that is already clean doesn't count. Premium removes the limit and adds 24-bit WAV and AIFF export.
